Although there are a couple of indications that the Chinese knew of a trade route through Ladakh to India. Since as early because the Kushan period and positively by Tang , little is really known of the history of the region before the formation of the dominion towards the top of the 10th century by the Tibetan prince, Skyid lde nyima gon, a grandson of the anti-Buddhist Tibetan king. His army originally numbered only 300 men but still conquered western Tibetan.
