Local population follow Vajrayana Buddhism almost like that found within the nearby Tibet and Ladakh regions. It is the gateway to the northernmost reaches of the state . Himachal Pradesh or Keylong via the Rohtang Pass or Kunzum Pass respectively along the northern route. The valley lies within the North Eastern section of the Indian state Himachal Pradesh, and forms a part of the Lahaul and Spiti district. Kaza is sub divisional headquarters, which is situated along the Spiti River at an elevation of about 12,500 feet above mean water level .
High mountain ranges surrounded the lahaul and spiti districts. The Rohtang Pass is 13,054 feet which separates Lahul and Spiti from the Kullu Valley.
